The New World

The New World

I was nervous to board the ship because I didn't know what the New World would be like. Would we be invaded and not have the tools to fight back? Or maybe on the way a terrible storm comes through and the ship sinks and we all die! I don't know if I should stay with my family because they need to decide not to go or to go along with the others and face the consequences of the New World.

My hopes are that we will all be treated well when we are in need of help. My dreams are that my family comes along and stays safe. I fear of the Spanish attackers and the Indians that may invade our land. We are moving because the people of England would like to discover if there is any gold in the New World and if there is more land to grow crops and tobacco that sells for a lot of money. If I happen to run into any people that aren't the same as me then I'll try to communicate to make sure they know what they are doing. Like maybe they don't know if they should stay or go. The last thing I need to do is make sure I have everything I need like the tools I use for my job as a laborer and all the supplies to fight back if needed.

We have been on the boat for about a month now and my family did decide to come along. I am starting to feel a little home and sea sick. I have completely nothing to do. I can't make up my mind if I should have said no and stayed in England or if I did make the right decision to tag along. There isn't much to talk about with anyone else on board. My littlest son Marcus who is only seven years old is now very ill and there are no doctors that can find a cure. My other son Tom and his other sisters Sue, Betsy, and Lilly are all worried. My wife Beth is also sick but she is recovering from the illness.

Everyone has eaten half the food so we are running short and my family and I are starving. I am worrying if I will survive the whole trip because the boat is slowly moving and like I said we have only been on the boat for a month and things are already going wrong. I myself am starting to feel a bit sick, but not that much. I was hoping that we would soon find land, but a strong gale came through so it blew us off course. No one knew because all we saw the whole first month was water.

At last land is found! Everyone on board is running off the ship to get on the land. Tom is good as new and the family is so excited to settle in after the long boring ride to the New World. Now all we have to do is find a nice place to set up shop and get to work. We must be careful about the spot we pick because any Indian tribe on the island could strike at any moment when we are not aware. We are now finding crops to plant.

Winter is here and I was right, we were running short on food. I still think to myself if I made the right decision to come or stay I just can't decide. I am here and the boat is gone so I guess my decision is made I stay. Many of my friends family and I have died because of the weather. All the kids are now in school and I am off to work on sunrise as a Laborer and my wife works sewing blankets and cloths for families and children. Once again little Tom is sick and sadly is dying. We need help.

Summer has come and yes sadly Tom died and the family is very sad. Even after Tom's death I still had to work and I haven't got much done because of my depression. Other than that things are much, much, much better than in the winter. The same Indian that saw me from the bushes the other month had came back, but this time he brought the whole tribe along with him. We made peace with them because they were glad we didn't pick to settle in their territory. The chief Indian showed me and only me how to grow crops faster than we learned in England and he also showed everyone else how to fish and hunt. We asked if they would like to join us in some of our land, but they refused. I do recall them saying that they did not live that far away and that we could come over if we needed anything. This is starting to turn out a wonderful life other then that Tom dead, witch is still very sad.
